Richard Robertson has been a member of Reed Cricket Club since 1981. For almost 30 years he has served the club as a player, cricket coach, groundsman, and committee member.

Richard’s still ongoing playing career has been long and distinguished, as a high quality bowler and a hard hitting batsman.

In addition to playing for Reed, Richard has also been an active youth coach. He personally coached and managed several hundred young cricketers who passed through the Reed Colts system during the 1990’s. Many of them are still active players, for Reed and for many other clubs in the Royston area.

However, arguably Richard’s greatest achievement and contribution has been in his work as the club’s groundsman.
The wickets Richard prepares at Reed, are regularly rated as among the best cricket pitches in Hertfordshire, and have been praised by the England and Wales Cricket Board’s, Inspector of Pitches. Richard invests a huge amount of his free time, in all weathers, in meticulous pitch preparation and ground cultivation. All of this hard work he undertakes on a wholly voluntary basis.

The Reed Ground is based on Reed Village Green and the village benefits from being able to use this well maintained recreation facility. The appearance of the Village Green has also been highly commended in various Best Kept Village Competitions.

In the last 2 years Richard, has undertaken additional work on the Freman College cricket ground at Buntingford. He now produces for Freman College another high quality, cricket playing surface, for the benefit of the students who attend the College. In return the facility is made available at weekends to Reed CC’s 3rd and 4th XI’s.

Overall Richard Robertson, during his 30 years at Reed CC, has made a remarkable voluntary contribution, not only to the Cricket Club, but also to the local community.
